WORKSHOP 02 ·
THE ART OF FILM PORTRAITURE
7-10am, October 9th
Ojai, California
A three-hour embodied film photography workshop.
This second workshop is devoted to the art of photographing another human being on film.
We’ll explore how I approach portraiture through presence, connection, light, composition and direction, and how to create photographs that feel alive rather than simply look beautiful.
For me, portraiture begins long before I press the shutter. It begins with the relationship between photographer and subject. With how we pay attention. How we create trust. How we help someone move beyond any self-consciousness of being photographed and into something more expressive, open and alive.
I’ll be demonstrating how I work in real time so you can experience my process from the inside: how I connect, how I direct without over-directing, what I’m looking for, what I respond to, and how I work with what is naturally unfolding rather than trying to manufacture a photograph.
Then you’ll have the opportunity to practice it yourself.
Everyone will spend time both behind and in front of the camera, because I believe experiencing what it feels like to be photographed is an essential part of learning how to photograph another person.
We’ll work with natural light, movement, composition, environment and the body, while exploring the deeper practice beneath all of it:
Learning how to really see someone.
And creating enough space for them to let themselves be seen.
EXCHANGE:
$445
Only 6 spots available.
Payment plans available at checkout.
For those wanting to go deeper, I’ll also be opening two workshop-only mini portrait sessions immediately following our morning together. This is available as an add-on when you check out.
A film camera you feel comfortable using. Nothing fancy required.
At least 3 rolls of film, black + white or color. Bring more if you tend to shoot quickly.
If you don’t own a film camera, disposable cameras are absolutely welcome. But if you are really wanting to learn more about film, I do recommend investing in a manual film camera!
A notebook + pen for taking notes. We’ll be putting our phones away and practicing being fully present.
Comfortable clothing you can move, sit, and explore in.
Layers for the cool Ojai morning.
A sun hat + water.
Something you feel good being photographed in. You’ll be spending time on both sides of the camera during our partnered portrait practices.
Curiosity, playfulness, and a willingness to see + be seen.
FILM DEVELOPMENT
You’re welcome to have your film developed on your own, and I’m happy to recommend a lab. Or, you can send your rolls in with mine after the workshop and reimburse me for the cost of developing + scanning.
